Did you know that most of the financial, volunteer and material resources are bypassing the coastal tribes and are going to New Orleans and Mississippi? This dynamic perpetuates years of isolation and marginalization these communities have experienced and make getting resources for our work very difficult. Please help end this disparity.

The following ideas are the most effective ways to work with Four Directions in solidarity with Native American communities on the Gulf Coast. Also, find out others who are helping to make a difference.

We are still in urgent need of an Apple powerbook or similar laptop (of recent design) with over 30gigs of hard disk memory, G3 or G4 processor and 512RAM. This computer should be capable of creating graphic art and digital media including audio and video files. We need the ability to communicate our work and our success stories. Please contact us if you can help. Thank you!

MONETARY DONATIONS - Updated May 26, 2006

It would be a cliche to say we are operating on a barebones budget... but we have white knuckles every day looking at our account balance! We have a number of very important projects we support, not just in coastal Louisiana but also with the Strongheart Civil Rights Movement (Oglala Lakota) in South Dakota/Nebraska. We also have administrative costs that are going unmet. Please help.

To donate visit our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, the Cloudforest Institute. Or call Cloud Forest's financial officer Jenny Burnstad at (707) 463-2482. Your donations are deductable to the fullest extent of the law.

    VOLUNTEER - Updated May 26, 2006

There is a critical shortage of volunteer help in the bayous. Our volunteer center in Chauvin is up and running. Please help. Individuals and group coordinators are asked to read the Volunteer Faq and then fill out the Volunteer Sign-Up form.

Needed: skilled and unskilled volunteers, trades-people, contractors, builders, roofers, framers, medical and community care personnel, cooks/kitchen skills, computer/communications techies and project organizers who can work in solidarity, mutual aid with these communities. Work will include:

  • Cleaning/Construction Teams to help rebuild and repair homes.

  • Community Empowerment Leaders who have experience as warriors or healers in preserving cultural traditions.

  • Landscape and Community Gardening Teams to help with food security and to prevent land loss.

  • Care Teams to assist with elder and community care concerns.

  • General Service Teams to assist with distribution of materials, assessments, service projects, etc.

Volunteers who have certain skills are asked to share their skills in skill-share sessions to increase the capacity of both volunteers and community members to perform certain tasks. If you can, learn how to use hammer/nails and other basic tools prior to coming down. That saves time and energy once on the ground.
